私たち人間は学名でホモ・サピエンス（賢いヒト）と呼ばれます。他の類人猿（ホモ）よりも、 「優れた知恵」が特徴だからです。他にも我々には特徴があり、 例えば「話すこと」もその一つ。この言語能力を誇って、 ホモ・ロクエーンス（しゃべるヒト）なんて呼び名もあるんですよ。

The scientific name for humans is Homo sapiens, which means “wise human”. This is because we have “greater knowledge” compared to other apes. One of our other characteristics is the ability to speak. Therefore, we are also Homō loquēns “talking humans”.

Sign languages are not universal. They differ by region and country and have their own dialects. The history of sign languages and the process of language acquisition are different from spoken languages. We welcome visitors to come learn about various sign languages at the language exhibition. 喉頭摘出や気管切開などで声を失った方に対して簡単に声を取り戻すための装置を開発しました。 Voice Retrieverといいます。スピーカー付きのマウスピースで、色々な音を簡単に出せるのが特徴です。 今後はアプリを開発して抑揚を出せるようにする予定です。

In this exhibition, we will introduce our oral appliance called "Voice Retriever" to retrieve the voice to patients who lost their voice due to laryngectomy or tracheostomy. It is a mouthpiece with a speaker and its characteristic is that it can produce various sounds. We are planning to develop an application so that it can produce natural intonation.

How can we bring Japan one step closer to a multicultural society? What can we do? Our multi-language and multi-culture escape game was developed by the students of Osaka Ohtani University. Please enjoy learning about the language and culture of our neighbor, China, while solving the riddles!

様々な言語能力が障害される失語症は，ろう者でも生じます． ろう者では手話を読みとったり，手話で表現したりする能力が障害され，「手話の失語症」と呼ばれています． 音声言語と手話言語の違いから，聴者の失語症検査を評価に利用するのは難しいため，「手話の失語症」に特化した検査を開発中です！

Aphasia impairs various language skills and also occurs in the Deaf. In the case of the Deaf, reading and expressing oneself in sign language is impaired, which is referred to as "aphasia of sign language". Because of the differences between spoken and sign language, aphasia tests for hearing people are difficult to use for the Deaf. Therefore, an aphasia test specifically designed for the Deaf is being developed!

言語を使う能力は、ヒトに与えられた奇跡とさえ思える素晴らしい能力です。 その能力は病気、事故など様々の原因で障害され、多様な言語症状が展開されます。こうしたことは誰にでも起こりうることですが、言語の障害は外からみえにくいことが多く、周囲の理解を得にくいことが少なくありません。 この展示を通じて、理解が広がるように願っています。

The ability to use language is a wonderful ability, one could even say a miracle given to humans. This ability can be impaired by illness, accident, or other causes, and a variety of language symptoms can develop. Although this can happen to anyone, language disorders are often difficult to detect from the outside, and it is often difficult to gain the understanding of those around us. I hope that this exhibition will enhance the understanding of such circumstances.

「手話から辞典」プロジェクトチーム / Making Japanese Sign Language Disctionary

ろう児の第一言語は「日本手話」。 しかし、第二言語である「日本語」を学習するうえで、調べたい日本語の単語をろう児が手話から自分で引ける手話引き辞典は存在しないです。 本プロジェクトはAIを利用し手話から日本語を引ける辞典を試行開発したものです。

When deaf Japanese children learn Japanese as a second language, there are words they want to look up by themselves using sign language. There are no such dictionaries available at present in Japan. We developed a pilot dictionary using AI.

「お母ちゃん」から「お母さん」と、子供の母親の呼び方が変わる時期があります。 この時「ち」から「さ」に置き換わります。「さ」は子供が最後に話すようになる音です。 この音が発生される仕組みをわかりやすく解説するデモをぜひご覧ください。

There comes a time when a child changes the way he or she calls his or her mother, from "okaachan" '(eng. 'momma') to "okaasan" (eng. 'mom'). At this time, the sound "ch" is replaced by "s". The "s" is the last sound the child learns. Please take a look at a demonstration video at the exhibition for an easy-to-understand explanation of how this sound is generated.

I worked at the Sign Language Linguistics Research Section (SiLLR) at Minpaku for four years as a research administrator. Since I had never been involved in sign language before, I was amazed at the mechanisms of sign language and how it is different from spoken languages. Knowing a language is a first step in getting to know others and beginning to interact with them. I wish you all the best in your encounters with sign language!

人間がいかに音声を発しているかを模型で示すコーナーでは、蛇腹（じゃばら）が空気をため、その空気が吐き出されるときにリードが振動し声の源が生まれ、そして音響管で母音に変わる様子を体験できます。異なる母音を発するには、音響管としての口の中の形も大事になります

In the exhibition there is a section for demonstrating how we produce human speech sounds. A bellow can be inflated, and when it shrinks, air flow is produced. That sets a reed into vibration, and finally, we hear a vowel through an acoustic tube. We see how important the tube shapes are for producing different vowels.

音楽のメロディを能動的・自発的に模倣する動物は稀ですが、オカメインコはメロディを模倣するだけではなく、流れている音楽のメロディにシンクロしてうたいます。会場には、この現象について学術誌上で発表した際の資料動画が展示されています。

Vocal imitation for melodies of man-made music is not universally seen in the animal kingdom. However, cockatiels imitate melodies of human music. In addition, they can synchronize the vocal timing with ongoing sound sequences. We exhibit movies of this behavior, which are provided as supplementary materials for an academic publication.

ことばを生成する器官のうち、舌は、口の中で占める体積が大きく、舌の筋肉群の運動により、いろいろな位置に動き、いろいろな形に変形して、いくつもの種類の母音や子音を作りだします。実際の舌と同じ大きさ・柔らかさで作った舌の模型を展示しています。

Among the organs that produce speech, the tongue takes up a large portion of the mouth and moves to various positions. It deforms into various shapes through the movement of the tongue muscles to produce several types of vowels and consonants. A model of the tongue with size and softness as the actual tongue is on display.

人間は、文理解の最中、様々な情報を用いて、入力済み部分の解釈を速やかに進め、また未入力部分の予測まで行います。現在行っている研究では、関西弁に独特のアクセント型の区別や、アクセント変化の規則に目を付け、それが予測処理に貢献するのかを調べています。

Humans use various types of information to predict upcoming input. One of my recent studies focuses on a phonological phenomenon specific to the Kansai dialect and how it facilitates a comprehenders' prediction about an upcoming word.
